Nokia yesterday finally launched its first 6 inch smartphone Lumia 1520 at an event in Delhi. Incidentally, this is also the first smartphone from Nokia to have a quad core processor. It is has been priced at Rs 46,999.
At its launch event we spent some time with Nokia's latest flagship product. Here is our first impression about the device.
What does it have?
Nokia Lumia 1520 comes with a 6 inch IPS LCD display with 1920 x 1080 pixel resolution. The display integrates ClearBlack technology that shows darker blacks while cancelling the reflection from bright lights. This Nokia handset has a quad core 2.2 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 mobile processor and an Adreno 330 graphics processing unit. It has 2 GB RAM and 32 GB on-board storage, and a memory card slot as well that can hold up to a 64 GB micro SD card. It runs on Windows Phone 8 operating system.
Nokia has armed it with a 20.7 megapixel image sensor with Pureview imaging technology. The image sensor is aided by Carl Zeiss optics and dual LED flash. The front facing 1.2 megapixel camera can be used for video chats.
Lumia 1520 features dual band WiFi , Bluetooth 4.0, NFC , GPS with A-GPS, and Glonass support. Nokia has packed a 3400 mAh battery in it. It is available in yellow, white, black and red colours.
Look and feel
Nokia Lumia 1520 has a unibody design, thus the battery is not removable. The body is polycarbonate with slim bezel. Apart from the volume rocker and power on/off on the side panel it also has a dedicated camera button. This is a nice utility that most smartphones today don't have.
Also, for better utilisation of the display live tiles in Lumia 1520 have a three column display instead of two like in previous Lumia smartphones.
Windows Phone 8 can be enjoyed to the fullest in this form factor but people with small palms may have to use both hands to operate the device.
Display
Nokia Lumia 1520 has a 6 inch IPS LCD display constructed with Corning Gorilla Glass 2 technology for protection against normal wear and tear. It offers great viewing angles, a refresh rate of 60 Hz, and supports full 1080p HD (1920 x 1080 pixel) resolution. By default, the Lumia 1520 offers 368 pixel per inch density for crisper text and clearer images as well as icons. There is no oleophobic coating on the display but it is easy to wipe off dust and fingerprints.
The new thing that Nokia has added to Lumia 1520 is Glance screen that allows the user to make the notifications of select apps visible even when the phone is in sleep mode. Overall the display quality of Nokia Lumia 1520 will not disappoint you.
Muscle power
Nokia has powered the Lumia 1520 with a 2.2 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 MSM8974 system-on-chip with Adreno 330 graphics support. Lumia 1520 features 2 GB RAM and comes with 32 GB on-board storage.
It also offers a hot-swappable memory card slot to accommodate a micro SD card and bundles 7 GB free SkyDrive storage through a Microsoft Account. The only point of concern is that the device uses a nano instead of micro SIM , which nearly all smartphones other than Apple use.
Smile Please
Lumia 1520 features a 20 megapixel camera with Pureview imaging technology and dual LED flash for better lighting. The rear camera comes with Carl Zeiss optics with f/2.4 aperture and focus range of 10 cm to infinity. The rear camera offers 2x digital zoom while maintaining the quality of the image. Users can record full 1080p HD videos. It comes with video stabilization and streaming features as well. Its front facing 1.2 megapixel camera supports 720p HD video recording.
I clicked some pictures with the Lumia 19520 in low light and was quite happy with the result.
While using the camera of Lumia, one thought crossed my mind. The USP of Lumia 1520's camera is not its resolution, but rather its software capabilities. For instance, one can use HERE maps and Pureview imaging together through Nokia Storyteller app to hear information about pictures that are in chronological order on a map.
Nokia has also introduced Refocus Lenst in Lumia 1520 that lets users change the focus of the picture after it has been clicked.
Add on
Nokia has added four sensitive microphones - two at the top and two at the bottom for better audio recording and cancelling the ambient noise in Lumia 1520. It will be quite useful while recording video and negating background noise.
Final words
Nokia phablet has been in the making for a long time but now it has finally arrived. It packages Nokia's best technologies in terms of hardware, software and design.
Lumia 1520 looks like a great device with amazing camera capabilities. Its price seems okay for what all it is offering and in sync with the price of most flagship devices from other players. We will shortly publish our full review of Nokia Lumia 1520 in the coming days. Till then keep reading The Mobile Indian.
