First cut-Lenovo VibeX

Over the last couple of months Lenovo has been launching smartphones at regular intervals. Yesterday it was the turn of Lenovo Vibe X, which has been launched for Rs 25,999 and will be available from 21 December.

We spent some time with the device at its launch event. Here is our first impression of the Lenovo VibeX.

Specification

Lenovo Vibe X comes with a 5 inch touchscreen with full HD resolution. It is based on Android 4.2 Jelly Bean operating system and has a Mediatek 6589T 1.5 GHz quad core processor. Most importantly, it has 2 GB RAM. Note that the said model will come with 16 GB internal storage and there is no word as of now on the 32 GB version. There is no micro SD card slot in the Vibe X.

The 6.9 mm thick Lenovo Vibe X weighs only 121 grams and has a 2000 mAh battery. This 3G handset has WiFi , Bluetooth , FM and GPS . It has gravitation, proximity, light, and e-compass sensors as well. It has a 13 megapixel rear camera and a 5 megapixel front camera.

First impression

Lenovo Vibe X has a plastic body, but what differentiates it from other phones in the market is its textured back, which has a laser-etched pattern. Also, one will notice a chrome-colored plastic line around the sides of the smartphone. In terms of design the phone looks good.

As far as the 5 inch IPS display of Lenovo Vibe x is concerned it has a resolution of 1080 x 1920 pixels. The display looks good from all the angles and colour representation too is quite decent.

We did not feel any lag, but on a couple of occasions it was taking a bit too long for opening the camera app. This may be because it was a test unit. We will comment on its performance when we review the device.

Like Huawei, Lenovo has listed, and in some cases bundled, apps in folders on the home screen, thus giving up on app drawer. In short they have adopted the iOS strategy for placing apps. People may or may not like this UI -it is purely a matter of preference.

On the camera front it has a 13 megapixel auto focus camera and on front it has a 5 megapixel camera. We took a couple of photographs in low light and were satisfied with the result. Although with a rear camera we were expecting much better results.

First take

In terms of design the device looks good but this is not the only criteria on which one makes a buying decision.

We will share our final verdict on the phone when we test it. Till then hold back on your smartphone shopping.
