Samsung has formally announced its new eight-core ARM Cortex application processor - Exynos 5 Octa 5420. This new application processor incorporates the ARM big.LITTLE architecture and packs twice the graphics muscle than the first generation eight-core mobile processor. This new Exynos 5 Octa is still under last minute sampling and expected to hit the production floors next month this year.
The new Samsung Exynos 5 Octa 5420 application processor is meant for smartphones and the tablets. This mobile processor is the successor of the Exynos 5 Octa 5410 chipset used in the Samsung Galaxy S4 smartphone.
Samsung's new eight-core Exynos 5 Octa is powered by four ARM Cortex-A15 processor cores clocked at 1.8 GHz and four ARM Cortex-A7 processor cores clocked at 1.3 GHz in the ARM big.LITTLE processing technology implementation. Under the ARM big.LITTLE processing implementation, the basic system activities are taken care of by the Cortex-A7 processor cores while conserving the battery life. On the other hand, the powerful processing and gaming activities are powered by the powerful Cortex-A15 processor cores.
The new Exynos 5 Octa 5420 is paired along with the ARM Mali-T628 MP6 cores for twice the graphics performance than the Exynos 5 Octa 5410. The ARM Mali-T628 MP6 has six graphic cores to push the gaming and 3D processing to the next level for the mobile platform.
Samsung is currently open to the customers for sampling the mobile processor and chipset is expected to hit production floors sometime in next month. That means, we can expect more powerful graphics supporting flagship devices from Samsung in coming year.
