Analyst: Lumia 1020 sales "modest at best", Xperia Z sales too

The pre-order campaign for the Nokia Lumia 1020, the WP8 flagship with a monster 41MP camera, started and ended pretty quickly, selling out at the AT&T online store in just a couple of days.

But how is it doing at AT&T's brick and mortar stores? William Power from financial services firm R.W. Baird made some calls to AT&T stores and asked sales reps about the Lumia 1020. Almost all of them praised the hardware, specifically the PureView camera, but said that sales were "modest at best". To be fair, the 1020 only hit stores on Friday.

The calls were made on Friday and Saturday, not long after the launch but while Power admits it's still the early days, he says it "feels like an uphill battle for Nokia and Windows".

Reps pointed to the high price - $300 no contract – and the change to a new OS as customers main worries about buying a Lumia 1020. Only a handful of stores reported they've sold out of 1020's, while others said Mr. Power was the first to ask about the Nokia flagship.

The analyst also called T-Mobile stores to ask how the water-resistant Sony Xperia Z Android flagship was doing. Sales reps at those stores recommend the Sony phone about as often as they do the HTC One, which is after the Samsung Galaxy S4 and the Apple iPhone 5.

Obviously, we'll have to wait until the quarterly financial results to get a better idea of the sales of both phones.
