"That's impossible!" you're probably thinking. How could Apple and Samsung take more than 100% of the profits in the mobile business? It's because most other companies are in the red, that's how, at least according to analysts from Canaccord Genuity.
Apple's share of the total profits in the mobile phone business went up from 53% in Q2 to 56% in Q3 this year. Samsung share also increased, going from 49% to 53%. According to Strategy Analytics, Apple rakes in more profits than the mobile divisions of Samsung, Nokia, LG, Motorola, Huawei and Lenovo combined.
The only other company that wasn’t in the red was Sony, which went from 1% to breakeven (0%).
Nokia, HTC and LG went from breakeven to -1% in Q3, while Motorola and BlackBerry took the biggest hits (-2% to -3% and -1% to -4% respectively).
Note that these calculations don't include Chinese makers like Lenovo, ZTE and Huawei (which are in or near the Top 5 smartphone makers worldwide).
The numbers will look different had those companies been included, but it's still pretty telling of the state of the mobile industry. Another thing not taken into account is that some Android vendors include profits from tablets into their number
