Nokia unviels Asha 501 one with refreshed operating system

Stephen Elop, chief operating officer of Nokia has just announced the Nokia Asha 501, a phone that redefines the Asha series of phones and brings in smartphone like Multitasking to this otherwise feature phone lineup.

The phone is based on a brand new operating system, which is the result of Smarter Phone acquisition Nokia made a few years ago and Meego operating system that Nokia abandoned after launching just one phone.

Nokia unviels Asha 501

The design of the phone is inspired by the Lumia series and even colour options are the same. Nokia has made Asha 501 in just two pieces, with rear cover removable to give access to memory card, SIM slot and battery, this has been done to improve durability.

New OS brings double tap to unlock feature and gets two home screens, one called the Fast lane and other being the app drawer. Somewhat similar to Windows Phone?

Fast lane shows (present) currently running apps, which is made possible by multitasking feature and (Past) shows messages and other notifications you've received.

The phone gets a 5 megapixel camera and 512MB RAM and there will be a dual SIM version as well. The phone is claimed to offer 17 hours of talktime on a single charge.

Stephen Elop has also announced that Nokia has tied up with operators, who will offer free access to Facebook on select Asha phones.

The event is still under progress and we will keep updating the story as we get more information.
