Amazon's phone will be all about the tilt

Although Amazon’s upcoming phone will be running Android, the online retailing mega-giant is taking lots of steps to provide a uniquely Amazon experience with their maiden handset. This includes not only heavily skinning the interface so that it doesn’t resemble Google’s OS, but also changing the way users physically interact with the phone as well: Amazon wants you tilt their phone.

The tilting action will reportedly be intertwined with multiple functions. Want to MMS a photo to a friend? Tilt the phone to the side to access your photo gallery. Let’s say you’re browsing videos in Amazon’s online video marketplace and want to check IMDB ratings and reviews for a movie. Again, just tilt and all of that information will be at your fingertips. The same applies to the Kindle application, and probably other apps that’ll be developed for Amazon’s handset.

That means that developers will need to create tilt-friendly versions of their respective applications. But how forthcoming will developers be in implementing tilt features with their apps? It all depends on whether or not the phone sells.

Although tilting does seem like a cool feature, it prompts another question: just how useful and intuitive is it? And will it capture the interest of consumers? Time will tell when the phone is finally released in a few weeks.
