iOS 8.1 is now rolling out, ready to download and install

Last week during its iPad-related event, Apple announced that iOS 8.1 would be out starting today. And the company has kept that promise, for the latest version of its mobile OS has already started rolling out to devices.

If you have an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, go to Settings > General > Software update, the new version may already be waiting for you to install it.

For owners of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus in the US, iOS 8.1 brings with it support for Apple Pay, the company's new digital wallet and payment service made possible through NFC and the Touch ID fingerprint sensor.

Aside from many bug fixes, the new software comes with new features for Photos, such as iCloud Photo Library as a beta service, a Camera Roll album and a My Photo Stream album. The Photos app will now alert you when you're running out of space before capturing time lapse videos.

The Messages app hasn't been neglected either, now boasting the ability for iPhone users to send and receive SMS and MMS messages on their iPad and Mac (through the much-discussed Continuity feature that's finally been given the go-ahead).

For cellular data, you can now choose between 2G, 3G, or LTE networks. Passbook passes got AirDrop support. A Dictation option for keyboards, separate from Siri, has been added to Settings. And finally, HealthKit apps can access data in the background.
