UMI S1 quad core Android 4.2 phone for Rs 12,000

UMI has announced a new quad core phone with UMI S1 priced at Rs 12,000. The phone is Android 4.2 Jelly Bean based and gets a 5 inch display with 1280 x 720 pixel resolution.

It uses a Mediatek MT6589 chipset with a 1.2 GHz quad core chipset coupled with 1 GB of RAM and the option of 8 GB and 16 GB ROM (inbuilt memory). The dual SIM phone also gets an 8 megapixel autofocus rear camera and 2 megapixel front camera.
In terms of connectivity you get 3G , WiFi , Bluetooth 2.1 (that's sad,) and GPS . You do not get TV out.

A 3 way G-sensor, light sensor, and distance sensor are present for good measure.
The UMI S1 uses a 2020 mAh lithium polymer battery with four hours of claimed talktime, which is nothing exciting despite it being a polymer battery, which is considered better.
In terms of software the phone does get the latest Android 4.2 Jelly Bean operating system and it also supports Hindi. It is 9.7 mm thick and weighs 187 grams, which is neither super thin nor lightweight, but is just about alright.

UMI has priced the phone well and comparable devices are at least Rs 3,000 costlier. Besides, very few compromises have been made, like an older Bluetooth version and slightly smaller battery, making it a good option. However, sales and distribution of UMI is still a work in progress and this may hamper the availability of the phone.
